Help me interpret the email I just received

Hello Psych Post Doc,

Thanks very much for your application to the post-doctoral position at the really cool place that you'd like to work. We are still finishing our first round of interviews this month, which should be completed by the end of May. I will certainly be in touch after that to let you know whether we can invite you for an interview. In the meantime, I do have your reference letters and CV, and I appreciate you sending along these materials.

Best wishes,
Person Running the Search

I won't share with you what I think until I've heard your unbiased opinions. Interpret away...

This means if they don't find someone they want to hire from their first round of interviews, then they'll go to round 2. They've made their initial first choices and if none of those works out, they'll go to their second choices. "Works out" also means they may offer the job to someone who, for some reason, declines the offer. Then the they'll go on to round 2 (second choices).

Good luck. Could still happen.

It pains me to agree here, but it seems the same to me. How long as the job been open? Or could it be an internal search before they go external? My interpretation was that they'd let you know either way and that if nobody impressed them from this group, they'd invite you to come visit. It doesn't sound to me like it was a matter of qualifications, just timing. What's your take on the situation?
